If you’re falling asleep with the TV on, and you do this on a regular basis, then that could be a sign that you need to get to bed earlier. You may feel that you require the television to be on in order for you to sleep, however, this is unlikely to be the case. If you’re falling asleep while watching something, you are obviously tired and in need of sleep and this can be the sign of an unhealthy lifestyle that you could change. To try to sleep better, it is best to avoid stimulating activities shortly before you go to bed, such as checking your emails and watching stimulating television shows, if you’re able to watch TV until you fall asleep then you’re probably forcing yourself to stay awake. This could mean that you’re not getting enough sleep, which is not a good thing as it can have many serious health consequences that are best avoided wherever possible.
Some of the most common side effects of a lack of sleep include feeling tired the next day, feeling grumpy, not feeling as alert as you feel you should be, struggling with memory loss and a drop in performance levels. Now, whilst this may not seem so detrimental to your health, they can be detrimental to the quality of your life in general, which itself can have negative consequences. There are however, physical and mental health issues that arise from a lack of sleep such as, depression, heart disease, diabetes and more. Also, even if it doesn’t cause health issues, when we sleep there are processes that occur that help to heal us, if we do not get enough sleep, and a good enough quality of sleep, then these processes cannot occur; what this means is that any illnesses or viruses that we may suffer from take longer to heal and can affect us more severely. By watching television, it can act as a distraction if it is on whilst we sleep, which also disturbs the processes that occur.
The best thing to do is, if you feel tired then go to bed, try and have your bedroom as free from distractions as possible; this means not having a television or computer in the room. Try to avoid your mobile phone as well, instead have the room as a sanctuary for sleep. By improving your sleeping habits it is possible to notice a distinct improvement in your levels of energy and health, as well as your general well-being, you will be far less grumpy and life will generally seem a lot better. It isn’t just the television that can affect things, as already mentioned, emails and other distractions before you go to bed can disturb your sleep, but it is so easy to falling asleep in front of the television, that is why it is best to try to avoid it for at least an hour before you plan to go to sleep.
