As nice as it can sometimes be to press that snooze button, sometimes you simply can’t; it may be that you have work, you have to get the kids to school or some other appointment to meet. The thing is, if you do need to use an alarm that does suggest that you are not getting enough sleep; if you are getting a sufficient amount of sleep then your body would wake up naturally without the need of an alarm. It is possible that it is not the case that you are getting not enough sleep, instead it could be a sign that this quality of sleep that you are getting is not good enough. This is just as serious as not getting enough sleep. The amount of sleep that we need is different for each person so it is impossible to give an accurate suggestion of how long you should sleep for, but if you’re waking up tired and need an alarm to do so, then those are just two indications that your sleeping habits should change.
A good way to find out how much sleep you actually need is by setting yourself a regular bedtime a certain number of hours before you have to get up, such as eight hours before. So if you have to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning try regularly going to bed at 11 o’clock the evening before, for about a week. If you still need your alarm clock to wake up then you are probably not getting enough sleep. Over the next three or four days, try going to bed 15 minutes earlier and if you still need your alarm clock then repeat this process until it gets to a point when you are waking up naturally, on time, at 7 o’clock. This should give you an indication of how much sleep your body needs, you can check to see how accurate it is by going to sleep one night half an hour later and see whether you wake up in time the next morning, and more importantly if you feel tired during the day, if you do then that is a good sign that you didn’t get enough sleep.
If you haven’t got any commitments that you need to meet that day and are able to press the snooze button then it is probably better for you as sleep is so important to us; however, it is much better to try and get your sleeping habits into some form of routine where you won’t need the alarm clock at all, although you could still use it as a back-up. Obviously, you don’t want to be late for anything, but forcing yourself to get up is not good as the body uses the time when we are asleep to re-energise and recharge, as well as being important for our health, so if you are tired it means that the body hasn’t completed the sleep that it wants to and it is will leave you tired for the rest of the day.
